How to Calibrate a PlayStation 3

While the default audio and video settings will work fine for most people, if you have a complicated home theater system complete with surround sound and an HDTV you'll want to adjust the settings of your PlayStation 3 to take advantage of your setup. This process is called "calibration." It involves adjusting the console's settings to make sure they are taking full advantage of your available equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the "Settings" icon (the second icon from the left side of the main menu) on your PlayStation 3.

    • 2

Select "Video Settings" to calibrate the way your PlayStation 3 sends and receives video to and from your television set. The "Language" menu options allow you to select the default languages for things like Blu-ray disc menus. Select "Video Output Format" to specify what type of cable you use to connect your console to your TV. If you use composite cables, for example, select "Composite" from the list of cables.

Select "Sound Settings" to calibrate the way your PlayStation 3 sends and receives audio information to and from your television set. Select "Audio Output Settings" and select all of the options in the list on screen that match your preferences. Select the type of audio cable you are using for your connection. Select the types of audio formats your television set or home theater receiver is capable of receiving. For a complete list of formats supported by a television or receiver, consult the manual that came with that device.
