How to Take Apart a PS3 to Get a Slipped Disk

When you insert a game disc or movie disc into your PlayStation 3, the disc retracts itself into the console along a track. If the disc slips from this track at any point it could get caught inside the console. In the event that this happens you can get the slipped disc out of the console by opening up the case. It is important to note that this will violate Sony's manufacturer's warranty for the console.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your PlayStation 3. Flip the "Off" switch on the back of the console. This will shut down all power to the PlayStation 3, making sure it is truly "off" and isn't just in "standby" mode.

    • 2

Disconnect the power cable and all of the audio and video cables from the back of your PlayStation 3.

    • 3

Remove any stickers from the sides of your PlayStation 3. These stickers are typically located over the point where the top half of the console meets the bottom half. Leaving them on will make the console more difficult to open.

    • 4

Push downward on the top panel on your PlayStation 3. The panel will disconnect from the base and slide in the direction that your hands are moving.

    • 5

Pull off the top panel of your PlayStation 3. An interior panel will be revealed. This interior panel is held onto the console using seven individual screws along the four sides of the panel. Remove each screw using a Phillips screwdriver and set it aside.

    • 6

Locate the small, black-colored plastic clip on the rear of your PlayStation 3. Push in on this clip with one hand. With the other hand, pull up on the top of your console. The top of the PlayStation 3 will separate from the bottom, revealing the inside. Use your hand to pull the slipped game disc out of the disc tray slot.
