How to Make a PS3 Gamertag

Gamers with a Sony PlayStation 3 can create user accounts with the PlayStation Network, a free service that allows players to join multi-player games, chat with other players, and download game demos and downloadable content. When signing up for a PlayStation Network account, each user creates a unique user ID much like a "gamertag," which is what an Xbox Live user uses to chat and play games online. Creating a user account can be done using the PS3 account creation wizard.

Instructions

  On the PS3 home screen, select the "PlayStation Network" icon and then select "Sign up for PlayStation Network" from the menu. Press the "X" button to start the account creation process.

  Select "Create a New Account" and press the "X" button. A screen detailing account creation will appear. Select "Continue" and press the "X" button.

  Select your home country, language and birth date. Select "Continue" and then press the "X" button to continue. A screen asking which type of account you wish you create will appear.

  Choose "Master Account" if this is your first PSN account. If not, you have the option of creating a "Sub Account," which is a user account with limited PSN access and with content controlled by the Master Account. Press the "X" button after selecting your account type.

  Read the PlayStation Network Terms of Service Agreement and select "Accept" at the bottom of the screen. Press the "X" button to continue.

  Enter your email address in the top box and a password in the second and third boxes. Select a security question from the last menu and enter your security question answer into the last box. Select "Continue" and press the "X" button to bring up the "Create an Online ID" screen.

  Enter your preferred online ID into the box. This is the ID that is visible to others when playing games and while using PSN messaging. Select "Continue" and press the "X" button.

  Enter your first and last names in the boxes provided. You can optionally select your gender on this page as well. Select "Continue" and press "X."

  Enter your home address in the boxes on this screen. Select "Continue" and press the "X" button.

  Enter your credit card information on this screen if you're planning to purchase things from the PlayStation Store or select "No Thanks" from the options to continue without entering any credit card data.

  Select whether or not you wish to receive e-mail notifications from Sony, then select "Continue" and press the "X" button.

  Review your account information on the following two screens and then select the "Confirm" button and press "X." Your user account with an online ID has now been created.
