How to Resign a Controller on PS3

Up to seven controllers can be used simultaneously on the PlayStation 3 console, which allows split-screen multiplayer games to be played with several additional players. When a controller is turned off, the other controllers keep their controller assignment number, which may cause issues in games that require a controller to be assigned to a specific controller number. Thankfully, there is a simple way to re-assign controller numbers using the PS3's XrossMediaBar, or XMB -- this can be done while in-game or on the PS3 home screen.

Instructions

  1. In-Game

    • 1

Press the "PS" button, which is the round button located in the center of the PS3 controller. The XMB menu will appear.

    • 2

Select "Reassign Controller" from the XMB menu and press the "X" button.

    • 3

Select a controller assignment number from the displayed list. Press the "X" button to confirm the controller number reassignment.

    • 4

Press the "O" button to close the XMB menu screen and return to your game.

    On the PS3 Home Screen

    • 5

Press and hold the "PS" button in the center of the PS3 controller until the XMB screen appears.

    • 6

Select "Turn off controller" from the XMB menu and press the "X" button. The PS3 controller will disconnect from the PS3 and turn off. The XMB menu screen will close automatically.

    • 7

Press the "PS" button to turn the controller back on. The controller will reconnect with the PS3 and take the lowest available controller assignment number.
