Check the user's manual for your television to determine its highest supported resolution. This resolution will vary depending on the model and manufacturer of your television. If you are having trouble finding this information, contact customer support for your TV's manufacturer.
Turn on the PS3 by holding down the center button on a controller. Once the system is up and running, use the joystick to move to the "Settings" option on the main menu. Scroll down to the "Video Settings" option and press the "X" button. Select "Video Output Settings."
Choose the type of connection you used to connect the PS3 and the television. You can choose "HDMI," "Component" or "Composite." HDMI is the cable typically used with HD televisions. Component cables can be a set of HD cables or standard video cables. Composite typically refers to an S-Video connection. Highlight your connection and press the "X" button.
Press the "X" button again to select "Change." You may see a flash on the screen as the PS3 changes to support the connection you chose. You will now see a list of resolutions. Highlight the highest supported resolution for your television and press "X." Select "OK" to continue.
Select the TV type on the next menu. You can choose between "16:9" for widescreen and "4:3" for standard, square televisions. Press "X" to confirm your selection.
Select "Save" on the final screen after reviewing your settings. The new settings you have chosen will appear on the screen. If they are not correct, press the "Triangle" button to go back and edit them.
