On the PlayStation 3, How Do You Play a Game While Chatting?

The PlayStation 3 gives players the ability to talk to one another while playing each other in an online game. There are various methods of communicating with one another, including keyboards, microphones and headsets. To talk to others while playing a game, you must have a headset that is compatible with the game console. You can only talk to others while playing an online game.

Instructions

  1. Setting up the Headset

      Power on the PS3 and let it boot.

      Update the firmware if you do not have version 2.50 or higher. To update, scroll over to "Settings" and click the "X" button on "System Update." The update may take a few minutes to install. If you already have version 2.50 or higher, you do not need to update.

      Insert the mini-B connector on the USB cable into the PS3 headset. The USB cable is included with the purchase of the headset.

      Insert the USB connector on the USB cable into an open USB port on the PS3. If the headset is wireless, the system automatically detects the headset and pairs the headset with the PS3.

      Press and hold the power button on the headset for three seconds to power it on.

      Scroll over to "Settings" and click the "X" button on "Accessory Settings."

      Click the "X" button on "Scan for Bluetooth Device." The system will scan for the headset's Bluetooth frequency.

      Click "Yes" when prompted to enable the headset to be paired with the PS3.

    Starting a Game

      Insert a PS3 game disc into the PS3. To play a game that has been downloaded to the PS3 hard drive, scroll over "Games" in the main menu and press "X" when the game you want to play is highlighted. Wait for the game to load.

      Scroll down to the online mode, which may be labeled "Online," "Online Play," "Online Game" or "Network Game."

      Press "X" on the controller.

      Follow the on-screen instructions to find an available online match. Each game is different, so read the instruction manual that comes with the game and follow the on-screen instructions to play the type of match you desire. Once the game starts, you will be able to communicate with your opponent(s) by talking into the headset. Only opponents with a headset can talk back to you.
