How to Connect Storage Media to a PlayStation 3

When you're not using your PlayStation 3 to play games, you may want to use the console to play videos, look at pictures or listen to your music collection. With the PlayStation 3's media connectors, it's possible to connect several different types of storage media to the console, such as an SD card or external hard drive. Once the media is connected and read, you're ready to access its content by going to the appropriate menu on the PlayStation 3.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your USB device to one of the PlayStation 3's USB ports, if you are using a thumb drive, external hard drive or other similar device. The USB port is located on the front of the console. If using a hard drive or camera, you must first connect a cable to it, and then connect the other end of the cable to the USB port.

    • 2

Lift open the media card panel on the front of the PlayStation 3 if you are using an SD card, CompactFlash card or Memory Stick, and insert the card into the appropriate slot. Only the CECHA01 and CECHE01 models have a built-in card reader. You can, however, connect a card reader to the console with a USB cable if your console doesn't have one.

    • 3

Power on the console, and then scroll to the desired category, such as Video, Photo or Music. Scroll down and select your storage media. Press the "Triangle" button, and then select "Display All." You will see all files on the storage media that apply to that particular category. For example, if you have video files on the media, you can only see them if you're in the Video category.

    • 4

Play any file by pressing "X." If desired, copy the file to the hard drive by pressing "Triangle" and choosing "Copy." To remove a USB device, simply pull it or its cord out of the port. Remove a media card by pressing in on it slightly until it is ejected.
