How to Use a Fiber Optic Digital Audio Cable on a PS3

A fiber optic digital audio cable is one of three different types of audio cables supported by the PlayStation 3. If you want to connect your PS3 to a stereo with a fiber optic jack, simply plugging in the cable isn't going to be enough. You will have to select the type of connection from the audio settings utility on the PlayStation 3 to make sure the console outputs the audio correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your fiber optic digital audio cable to the output on the back of your PlayStation 3. Line up the shape of the plug with the output on the console. Push the plug into the console and turn it clockwise to lock it into place.

    • 2

Plug the other end of the cable into the input on your television set, stereo receiver, or other electronic device. Line up the shape of the cable plug with the input on the electronic device. Push in the plug and turn it clockwise to lock it in place.

    • 3

      Turn on your PS3.

    • 4

      Select "Settings" and "Sound Settings."

    • 5

Select "Audio Output Settings." From this menu, select "Digital Out (Optical)." The PlayStation 3 will output all audio over the fiber optic digital audio cable.
