Sony PS3 Cooling Issues

Sony's PlayStation 3 is a home entertainment device capable of video, music, gaming and Internet browsing. It performs many of the same functions as a high-end computer. Like a PC, the PS3 can generate considerable heat during prolonged use. To maximize your PlayStation's performance, you should be aware of the strategies for keeping your device cool even under extended use.
  1. Ventilation

    • Place your PlayStation in a well-ventilated area. There are exhaust fans that continually blow air out of the back of the machine. Give these fans lots of room to circulate air. Do not place the PlayStation in an enclosed cabinet or in a corner.

    Dust

    • Clean the exhaust vents regularly. Cans of compressed air are an effective way to clean out the exhaust ports and can be purchased at any store that sells office supplies. If your PlayStation is on the floor, sweep around it regularly to keep dust away. If the machine is sitting on a table, clean the area often to prevent dust bunnies from getting sucked into the fans.

    Room Temperature

    • The ambient temperature of the room can have an effect on the internal temperature of the PS3. Keep the unit away from any sources of heat such as space heaters, heating vents and other high-temperature electronic devices like PCs. Place a small desk fan near the PlayStation during summer months to provide additional cooling.

    Accessories

    • Purchase a laptop cooling pad. These pads are built with additional fans that blow air into the vents on the underside of the machine and will help cool the PS3. A cheaper alternative is to purchase some "rubber feet" risers. Place them at the corners of the machine and it will create a space beneath the machine to allow greater airflow.
