How to Use a Standard Flash Drive on a PS3 for Movies

The PlayStation 3 can play video files directly from a flash drive and copy files from the flash drive to the PS3's hard drive. Although the PS3 supports more video formats than other consoles, any video that requires a special codec might not display properly, or play at all. Any file that requires a license cannot be played from the flash drive or transferred to the gaming console. The PS3 supports the video formats MP4, MPEG, MPEG-2, AVI, DivX and WMV.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the flash drive into one of the front USB ports on the PS3.

    • 2

Use the directional pad on the PS3 controller to scroll to the "Video" tab on the PS3 main menu. Highlight "Display All" and press the "Triangle" button to display all the videos on the flash drive.

    • 3

Select the video you want to play and press the "X" button. You'll also have the option of copying the video from the flash drive to the PS3 hard drive. Select the video you want to copy, press the "Triangle" button and select "Copy."
