How to Update PS3 Firmware Via an SD Card

The PlayStation 3 game console does more than just play games. It's also designed to let you watch Blu-ray movies, view picture slide shows, listen to music files and download extra content. By downloading occasional firmware updates, your PlayStation 3 is able to gain new features and receive improvements. If an update is needed, you will be prompted to download it directly to the system as soon as you turn it on. However, it is also possible to download the update to an SD card and insert it into the system for installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the SD card into the card reader of your computer. The SD card does not need to be empty, but there must be at least 168 MB of space free on it.

    • 2

Click "Start," then click "Computer." Under "Devices with Removable Storage," double-click the name of the SD card.

    • 3

Right-click in the SD card window and select "New Folder." Type "PS3" as the name for the folder. Double-click the new PS3 folder.

    • 4

Right-click on the screen in the PS3 folder. Click "New Folder." Name the folder "UPDATE."

    • 5

Go to the PlayStation website. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Click "PS3 System Update." Click "Download Now," and then scroll down and click "Download Now" again.

    • 6

Click "Save" and select the "UPDATE" folder as the save destination. Name the file "PS3UPDAT.PUP."

    • 7

Remove the SD card and insert it into the SD card reader on the PlayStation 3. Turn on the system.

    • 8

Scroll to the "Settings" option at the main menu. Scroll down and select "System Update." Press "X," and then select "Update via Storage Media." Press "X."

    • 9

Highlight "OK" and press "X." Wait for the update to download to the system. Check that the update completed successfully by going to "Settings," "System Settings" and "System Information."
