Original Models
The launch models of the PlayStation 3 were available with four different hard-drive sizes: 20 GB, 40 GB, 60 GB and 160 GB. All but the 20 GB models also incorporated a memory-card slot that could read Compact Flash (CF) and SD cards.
Slim Models
The PlayStation 3 was rebranded with a smaller casing in 2009 and labeled the "Slim" line of consoles. There are four models available, all with different hard-drive sizes: 120 GB, 160 GB, 250 GB and 320 GB.
Memory Sticks
The original PlayStation 3 models allowed for the use of Sony memory sticks. These memory sticks can't save game files, but they can save movies, videos and photos. Users have the option to either copy media to the PlayStation 3's hard drive or play the files directly off the memory stick.
Memory Support
Only the original PlayStation 3 models had memory-card readers. However, the newer Slim models have two USB ports that users can use along with memory-card-to-USB adapters, allowing you to stream music, photos or video from the card through the console.
Upgrades
The PlayStation 3 uses 2.5-inch Serial ATA hard drives that are upgradeable, though the hard drive must be specifically designed for the console or compatible with it. You cannot use external hard drives on any PlayStation 3 model unless you format them to the FAT32 format using software such as the Fat32Formatter.
