Remotes That Work With PS3

The PlayStation 3 video game console forgoes the use of IR wireless technology in favor of Bluetooth. This means that the PS3 is not compatible with most universal remotes, since they use the same IR signals that most televisions, DVD players and AV receivers use. Short of using the PS3 controller itself, there are several remote controls that are compatible with the PS3.
  1. Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray DVD Remote

    • Manufactured by Sony, this PS3 remote is one of the only remotes that is 100 percent compatible with the PS3. It offers all the buttons you need to operate a Blu-ray DVD. The downside is that it uses Bluetooth technology, so it is not compatible with any IR devices, meaning you cannot pair it with any of your other AV components. The remote retails for $19.99.

Logitech Harmony Adapter for PlayStation 3

    • This adapter lets you use any Harmony universal remote control with your PS3. You can program your remote to use all 51 of the possible commands the PS3 recognizes, including the ability to turn the console on and off. This is an expensive solution, retailing for $59.99. In addition, a Harmony remote and each button must be programmed individually, but you can use your Harmony universal remote with all of your AV components.

    Nyko Blu-Wave Infrared Remote

    • This package includes an IR remote and a USB dongle to communicate with the PS3. The remote includes all of the buttons you need, sans a power on/off button. The USB dongle is also programmable with other IR remotes; however, each command must be programmed individually. Retailing for $14.99, this is the most affordable solution.

    Schmartz USBIRX3

    • This USB dongle allows you to program any universal remote with the PS3, allowing you to use it with your existing universal remote. Retailing for $30, it falls in between some of the other solutions. Its limitations include subtitle and audio buttons that do not work, as well as the inability to power the console on or off.
