How to Use a USB Flash Drive on a PS3 to View Videos

With firmware update 2.1, Sony added the ability for playback of DivX and WMV digital video files on the PS3. What this means is that you can connect a USB drive full of digital video files, play them back on the PlayStation 3 and watch the videos on your television. In order to use your flash drive to play videos on the PS3, the drive must be properly formatted and the videos must be in a certain folder.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the USB flash drive to your computer. Select "Computer" from the "Start" menu. Right-click the USB flash drive, select "Format..."

    • 2

Enter a name for the USB flash drive. Select "FAT32" as the format, click "Format." If the drive is already formatted in the FAT32 file system format, you can skip this step.

    • 3

Double-click the USB flash drive, within "Computer." Select "File," then "New Folder..." Name the new folder "Video."

    • 4

Drag the video files from your computer to the newly created Video folder.

    • 5

Disconnect the USB flash drive from the computer. Connect the USB flash drive to the PS3's USB port.

    • 6

Navigate to the Video folder within the PS3's XMB menu system. Select a video on the flash drive to begin playback on the PS3.
