How to Set Your PS3 to HD From HDMI

Your PlayStation 3, more commonly referred to as a PS3, includes multiple video output options that support both standard and high-definition playback. This also includes HDMI output. After plugging in your PS3's HDMI cable, the system automatically detects the highest video resolution capable from your HDTV. When you turn on the console, the PS3 guides you through two prompts to finish configuring your audio and video settings. However, if you are changing to HDMI output from another cable, you may have to reset your video output settings in order for the console to properly detect the correct configuration.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch the "Main Power" button to "Off" on the rear of the PS3. Turn off the HDTV.

    • 2

Plug your HDMI cable into the PS3's rear "HDMI" port.

    • 3

Plug the opposite end of the cable into your television's HDMI input. Refer to the HDTV's manual for the location of the HDMI input, if necessary.

    • 4

Switch the PS3 console's "Main Power" to "On."

    • 5

Turn on the HDTV and change its input setting to "HDMI." Refer to the HDTV's manual for assistance if you do not know how to change its input setting. Your PS3's picture displays on the HDTV.

    • 6

Select "Yes" at the prompt asking you to choose "HDMI" as your output. See the Tips section if this prompt does not appear.

    • 7

Select "Yes" on the next prompt asking you to choose the highest possible resolution offered by your HDTV.

    • 8

Select "Yes" again to accept the settings.
