Types of PlayStation 3 Wireless Controllers

There are many ways to play games on the Sony PlayStation 3 because of a diverse library of game titles as well as third-party development. The PlayStation 3's Bluetooth capabilities and USB ports allow Bluetooth-capable and USB dongle-enabled wireless connections for a variety of controllers.
  1. Sixaxis

    • The Sixaxis wireless controller was bundled with the first generation of retail PlayStation 3s. In the controller are sensors that allow players to control in-game movements by tilting the controller. The controller uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with the PS3.

    DualShock 3

    • As of April 2011, the DualShock 3 is bundled with the current generation of PlayStation 3 models. It contains Sixaxis motion sensors and it adds rumble technology that makes the controller vibrate in reaction to on-screen action.

    Third-Party Control Pads

    • There are a few controllers that aren't manufactured by Sony. MadCatz and Nyko are two companies that manufacture wireless third-party controllers.

    PlayStation Move

    • The PlayStation Move is the wireless controller that relies on motion sensors and the PlayStation Eye camera accessory to discern the player's motions. It is required by several titles, such as "Sports Champions" and "PlayStation Move Heroes." Other games support the PlayStation Move controller as an option for those who prefer to play with motion controls instead of the typical game pad.

    Music Game Controllers

    • Several music games for the PS3 require specialized wireless controllers. The "Guitar Hero" series uses wireless guitars and drum sets, and the "Rock Band" series uses its own versions of those two controllers as well as a wireless MIDI keyboard. "DJ Hero," another music game, has a wireless turntable device. There are also third-party wireless microphones available for both "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero."

    "Tony Hawk: Ride" Skateboard Controller

    • Activision's "Tony Hawk: Ride" was released in 2009 and bundled with a wireless skateboard peripheral. Players control in-game movement using the skateboard controller. The 2010 sequel, "Tony Hawk: Shred," also uses the same skateboard controller.
