Choosing The Best Connection Option
Examine the owner's manual for your LCD TV and external home theater audio system. Determine the types of audio and video connections supported by your television and audio system. To take advantage of the best picture and sound quality offered by the PS3, consider using the HDMI connection option. Since HDMI carries both audio and video signals in a single cable, it's also the simplest and cleanest option. You must use the HDMI connection option if you wish to play high-definition Blu-Ray movies that are encoded with DRM (digital rights management.)
Select one of the three other connection options available on the PS3, if your LCD television does not support HDMI. The optional component AV cable for the PS3 includes three RCA-type connection plugs for the video portion and two connection plugs for the audio signals. Although the PS3 supports 1080p video resolution when using the component AV cable, certain LCD televisions may not; refer to your television's video input specifications, located within the owner's manual for clarification.
Choose the optional S-video or supplied composite AV connection cable if your LCD television does not support HDMI or component input connections. These connections do not support high-definition video and should only be used as a last resort, due to the reduction in picture quality.
HDMI Connection
Turn off the PlayStation 3, LCD television and any optional connected home theater equipment.
Examine the rear portion of the PS3 and locate the desired AV connection. The two AV connections at the rear of the PS3 feature descriptive labels for your convenience. The component, supplied composite and S-video cables plug into the larger rectangular-shaped connection labeled "SCART," while the HDMI connection features a smaller and narrower rectangular shape.
Connect the HDMI cable from the rear of the PS3 to an available HDMI input on rear of the LCD television; if your home theater audio receiver features an HDMI input/output "pass-through" option, connect the HDMI cable from the PS3 to the "HDMI IN" port, located on the audio receiver.
Connect a second HDMI cable from the "HDMI OUT" port on the audio receiver to an available HDMI input on the television. If the audio receiver does not support the HDMI "pass-through" option, connect a pair of RCA audio cables from the television's "AUDIO OUT" connection to the audio receiver's "AUDIO IN" connection.
SCART Connection
Connect the desired SCART cable to the rear of the PS3.
Connect the other ends of the composite, component or S-video connection cables to the corresponding color-coded AV inputs, located at the rear of the television.
Connect a pair of RCA audio cables from the "Audio Out" connections on your television, to any available "Audio In" connections found at the rear of your home theater audio receiver. If your home theater system already has audio connections between the television and audio receiver, disregard this step.
PS3 Setup
Turn on the television, home theater audio system and PS3 system.
Switch to the appropriate video input option on the television to display the PS3 audio/video setup screen. Switch to the appropriate audio source on your home theater receiver.
Follow the audio/video instruction prompts to set up the PS3's AV options, using the game controller to finish the installation process.
