How Can I Transfer Data Between Two PS3s?

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a multimedia home entertainment system developed by electronics juggernaut Sony. In addition to playing video games and a multitude of other functions, it can also be utilized as a storage device for digital music, photos and videos. While content such as game data, patches, download content and PlayStation Network games cannot be transferred from one PS3 to another, certain content, such as game saves and digital photos, music and videos not purchased from Sony Network, can.

  1. Transfer Via USB Flash Drive

    • 1

Highlight the desired content to be transferred, whether it be game save data, music, photos or video. Navigate the home menu of the PS3 (called the "XMB") until you have highlighted your desired content.

    • 2

Plug in the USB flash drive. There are two USB outlets located on the lower left of the front facing on the PS3. An indicator message should momentarily pop up stating that a new device has been inserted.

    • 3

Copy the data to the USB flash drive. With the highlighted data, press the Triangle button, which brings up an option to get the data information or to copy. Select "Copy" to automatically save the data to your flash drive.

    • 4

Plug in the USB flash drive into the second PS3. Take the USB flash drive out of the first PS3 and plug it into the powered-on second one.

    • 5

Transfer the data to the new console. On the main menu of the second PS3, go to the appropriate subcategory of the data to be transferred and scroll down to highlight the USB flash drive icon. Press Triangle to bring up the option to "Display All", which will bring up a menu of the contents. Highlight the data you want to transfer and press "Triangle" once more to bring up the option to copy the file. Select "Copy" to transfer the data.

Connect the two PS3s with an Ethernet cable. With each PS3 connected to a separate video input on the television, attach the Ethernet cable to the back side of each PS3. Ensure that a DSL Internet or Wi-Fi network is connected to your source PS3. Turn both systems on and tune the television to view the source PS3. If you are not currently connected to the Internet, scroll over to the "Settings" option on the PS3 home menu and then scroll down to the "Network Connection" option. This will lead you through a series of steps to set up the Internet connection.

    • 7

Create a PlayStation Network account. If you have not done so already, create an account selecting the "PlayStation Network" icon on the main menu. Follow the steps to set up your account.

    • 8

Prepare the source PS3 for transfer. On the home menu of the PS3, scroll over to "Settings" and then scroll down to "System Settings." Select the "Data Transfer Utility" and then select the first option, "Transfer Data From This System to the Other PS3 System."

    • 9

Follow the PlayStation Network online data transfer preparation steps. After completing the last step, you will automatically be prompted and walked through a series of options to sync your game trophy information to your PlayStation Network account. Without doing this, you will not be able to transfer your trophy information.

Begin the transfer on the destination PS3. Switch the television to view the destination PS3. On this PS3's main menu, scroll over to the "Settings" and then scroll down to "System Settings." Select the "Data Transfer Utility" and select the second option, "Transfer Data From the Other PS3 System to This System", to begin the transfer.
