How to Expand a PS3 Hard Drive

PS3s come equipped with varying hard drive sizes ranging from 20 to 320 gigabytes, depending on the model. These hard drives are capable of holding numerous types of media, including music, movies and game content. Over time, your console's hard drive may not have enough storage space to suit your needs, prompting you to expand storage capacity. Unlike other console's, such as the Xbox 360, you can buy any type of hard drive, so long as it fits Sony's specifications. The console also comes with a backup program, allowing you to transfer all your old data to the new hard drive.

Instructions

  1. Back Up Your Hard Drive

    • 1

Connect a USB flash drive to a USB port on the PS3.

    • 2

Turn on the PS3 and go to "Settings."

    • 3

      Select "System Settings."

    • 4

Choose "Backup Utility." Three options appear. Choose "Back Up."

    • 5

Choose "Yes" to confirm you wish to back up your data to an external device.

    • 6

Choose the USB device. The PS3 backs up your data to the USB flash drive. After you install your new hard drive, you can load your old data.

    Install New Hard Drive

    • 7

Turn off the PS3 and remove the hard drive bay cover by pulling it off the side of the console. You can gain leverage by working the Phillips screwdriver beneath the cover's hinge.

    • 8

Unscrew the blue screw, located on the hard drive's holder, using the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 9

Grab the metal latch on the hard drive case, slide it toward the front of the console and then pull it out of the PS3.

    • 10

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the four screws on the hard drive case.

    • 11

Slide the hard drive out of the case.

    • 12

Slide your new hard drive into the case then reverse install everything back into place.

    • 13

Load the backup utility again, but instead of choosing "Back Up" when the three options appear, choose "Restore" to load your old data onto the new hard drive.
