How to Rebuild a 20GB PlayStation 3

Sony PlayStation 3 systems are made with two internal hardware components that can be replaced to rebuild a broken console. The system's hard drives, ranging from 20GB to 320GB capacity, and Blu-ray disc drives can be purchased online from a variety of merchant resellers. You can rebuild your PS3 with these components in about 20 minutes.

  • PS3
  • 20GB PS3 hard drive
  • PS3 Blu-ray drive
  • Torx screwdriver (size 10)

      Unplug the PS3 and open the console using the Torx size 10 screwdriver. Open the case and locate the system's internal hard drive and Blu-ray drive.

      Unplug both the hard drive and the Blu-ray disc drive from the PS3 motherboard. Lift each hardware component out of the system's case. Replace each device with the hardware you purchased and connect them to the PS3 motherboard. Each component has both a SATA data cable and a power cable.

      Turn on the PS3 and run a game or movie disc. The rebuilt system will function normally after the defective hardware is replaced.
