How to Reflash a PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is one of the most popular gaming consoles ever made, and there are regular updates for the machine. Staying on top of these is the best way to ensure your console is operating at its full potential. You can keep your PS3 up-to-date by reflashing the system with updates from the Internet on a regular basis.

  • USB Flash Card (or SD card or memory stick)

Instructions

  1. Reaching the System Update Section

    • 1

      Turn off the PS3 by holding down the power button for a few seconds. Then, turn it back on, and wait for the boot up screen to appear.

      Connect the PS3 controller to the console using the USB connection cable. Insert the USB Flash card (or other memory device) in the console.

      Check that the set-up menu appears on the screen. Using the controller, scroll down to "System Update," and select it by pressing the "X" button.

    Reflashing Your PS3

      Scroll down, and select "Update via Storage Media."

      Confirm that you want to begin the update by pressing the "X" button. Wait for the process to complete.

      When it's finished, the system will reboot. Select "Settings," then "System Settings," then "System Information."

      The number on the screen should match that of the update with which you reflashed the console.
