Blu-ray Discs
Blu-ray discs are optical storage devices similar to DVDs and CDs but are capable of storing much more information. A single layer disc can store up to 25 GB of data, and a dual layer disc up to 50 GB. Video stored on the discs may be up to 1920x1080 pixel resolution at 59.94 frames per second, if interlaced.
Blu-ray 2.0 profile
Sony released version 2.0 of the Blu-ray profile in 2008, and it is supported by the PlayStation 3 with the latest software upgrades installed. This standard requires Blu-ray players to include two secondary audio and video decoders, 1 GB of local storage and an Internet connection. Blu-ray movies with "BD-Live" stickers on the case require a player supporting profile version 2.0.
3D Blu-ray
The Blu-ray Disc Association agreed upon a 3D movie standard in 2009 that would be backwards compatible with PlayStation 3 consoles. It uses the Multiview Video Coding codec that delivers a full 1080p HD frame to both eyes. A 3D-capable HDTV or HD projector with active glasses is required to view the 3D effect with the new standard. Movies labeled with Blu-ray 3D stickers are compatible with this format.
Blu-ray Disc remote control
Sony's remote control to play movies with the console is not included, but available for purchase. The remote is 2 inches wide by 1 inch thick by 8.6 inches long. It is powered by two AA batteries and includes familiar VCR-style buttons, such as Play, Fast Forward, Rewind, Stop and Eject. It also has buttons specific to the PlayStation 3 to allow configuration of system settings.
