Insert the storage media into your computer.
Open the storage media on your computer, and create a folder labeled "PS3."
Create another folder labeled "UPDATE" within the new folder. The folder names must be in capital letters in order for the PlayStation 3 to recognize them.
Open the Internet browser program on your computer, and visit the PlayStation Support Software Update website.
Click the button labeled "Download" to save the newest PS3 software update to your computer. When prompted to choose a location to save the update file, choose the "UPDATE" folder you created on the storage media.
Make sure that the file is saved as "PS3UPDATE.PUP." Click "Save" to download the file onto the storage device.
Safely remove the storage media from your computer using the method provided by your operating system.
Insert the storage media into your PS3 console.
Turn on the PlayStation 3 if you have not already done so.
Select "System Update" from the "Settings" section of the PS3 menu, and press the "X" button.
Select "Update via Storage Device," and press the "X" button. Once the PS3 locates the software update file, press the "X" button to begin the update.
Accept the terms of service for the software update by pressing the "X" button, and allow the console to update.
Remove the storage media and delete the update file from the device once the system confirms that the update is complete. The PlayStation 3 may restart during the update process.
