How to Repair a Sony YLOD

Most video game systems have a light sign that means trouble for the platform. Most notably is the Xbox 360 ring of death. Sony's PlayStation 3 has the yellow light of death, or YLOD. When powering up the PS3, you may notice the front light turns to yellow (instead of red or blue). This stems from the internal hardware on your PS3 overheating. You may be able to correct the problem yourself, but if not, the only other way to repair the equipment is to send it off to Sony.

Instructions

    • 1

Power down the PS3 and wipe off the air intake vents on the side and rear of the device.

    • 2

Spray several shots of compressed air into the PS3 through the vents. This removes debris that may be stuck to the central circuit board, causing the YLOD.

    • 3

Move the PS3 away from any confined spaces, such as an entertainment system, to maximize the air intake to keep the hardware cool.

    • 4

Power on the PS3 after several hours. If you still receive the YLOD, your only other option is to send the PS3 into Sony. Contact Sony (1-800-345-7669) for the nearest location that can service your PS3. Take the PS3 to the service center and explain the problem. Repair typically involves installing new circuit boards and other hardware.
