How to Make Video Calls on a PS3

With the release of the PlayStation Eye in October of 2007, Sony enabled owners of its PlayStation 3 console to make video calls and video conferences with ease. Using the PlayStation Eye and its built-in microphone array, you can keep in touch with family and friends, or hold conferences with business associates and fellow gamers. The service is free, and you need only pay for your connection to the Internet.

PlayStation Eye or PS3-compatible webcam
Broadband Internet connection

Instructions

  Turn on your PlayStation 3.

  Plug in the PlayStation Eye or any other PS3-compatible webcam to your PlayStation 3's USB port. If the webcam does not have a microphone, you can use a PS3-compatible USB headset instead.

  Hold right on your controller's analog stick to navigate to the "Friends" icon on the Cross Media Browser, or XMB, menu.

  Navigate to "Start New Chat" and select it with the X button to enter the chat room.

  Navigate to the "Invite a Friend" button and select it with X. Scroll through your list of friends and press X to add them to your invitation list. Select "OK" to the right of the list to review your invitations. Press X to "Send." Any friends who accept your invitation will appear in your chat room.

  Navigate to and press X to select "Chat Settings," then select the "Camera On" option to open video chat. Up to six friends or family members, not including yourself, can take part in your video conference, providing they also use a PS3-compatible webcam.
