Basics
Each PlayStation 3 console has one HDMI port. Originally it was announced the system would come with two, but Sony cut it down to one when the system began production. Models manufactured before May 2009 come with HDMI 1.3, while models created after May 2009 come with HDMI 1.4 to accommodate 3D gaming.
HDMI 1.3
HDMI 1.3, which is the standard on PlayStation 3 consoles manufactured before May 2009, has a single-link bandwidth of 340 Megahertz for high-definition image transfer, faster frame rates and 16-bit colors. It also features automatic audio syncing to create more accurate syncing of sounds to images when displayed on a screen.
HDMI 1.4
HDMI is found on PlayStation 3 consoles manufactured after May 2009. It features many of the same specifications of HMDI 1.3 but it increases the maximum resolution to 4K standards (3,840-by2,160). However this resolution is only useful in digital cinemas and not on the PlayStation 3 where game resolution peaks at 1,920-by-1,080 lines of resolution. The most important addition of HDMI 1.4 is stereoscopic support, which allows for 3D gaming with the inclusion of a 3D-equipped television.
Other Connections
The PlayStation 3 also features composite video output, which uses red, yellow and white connectors. This output is suitable for older, standard-definition televisions and cannot transfer high-definition images. It also has component output, which uses red, green and blue connectors. Component output can transfer high definition video but only at a maximum of 720p (1,280-by-720 lines of resolution) or 1080i (1,440-by-1,080 lines of resolution).
