How to Play PlayStation 3 Guitar on a Computer

PlayStation 3 (PS3) music games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band are among the biggest selling titles for the Sony game console. Guitar game enthusiasts often purchase digital guitar instruments to make the games more lifelike and enjoyable. Since guitars made for the PS3 connect to the console via a USB cable, they are compatible with most PCs. To use a PS3 guitar with PC music games such as Frets on Fire, Jam Legend or Shred Master, you must download a free application that allows you to map, or set up, the instrument before using it with your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Direct your Web browser to the Xpadder website (See Resources). Download the Xpadder application to your computer.

    • 2

Browse to the folder on your computer where you saved the Xpadder file. Right-click on the file and click "Extract Here" on the pop-up menu. Next, double-click the Xpadder.exe to install the application on your computer. Reboot your PC if prompted.

    • 3

Insert the USB cable from the PS3 guitar into an empty USB port on your PC. Wait while Windows detects and configures the guitar automatically.

    • 4

Launch the Xpadder application. Click "New" in the top left corner of the screen. Click the "DPAD" tab on the pop-up window.

    • 5

Click and select the "Enabled" option and then the "Detect" button. Follow the prompts on the screen to map (set up) the buttons on your guitar controller. Press the correct buttons on the PS3 guitar for up, left strum and right strum.

    • 6

Click the "Buttons" tab. Press on each fret of the PS3 guitar neck. This allows Xpadder to map the frets and synchronize them with your computer. Once you finish mapping the frets, minimize Xpadder. Open your PC music game and use the guitar as you normally would with the PS3.
