How to Connect a PlayStation 3 With Only One HDMI Input

The Sony PlayStation 3 allows you to play high-definition games and watch Blu-ray movies, all through the same system. In order to get the best graphics and sound possible, you'll want to use your HDMI cable to connect the PlayStation 3 to your television. Some older high-definition televisions, however, only have one HDMI input, which means if you already have a device plugged into that port -- like your cable box or satellite system -- your PlayStation 3 has nowhere to connect.

Things You'll Need

  • HDMI switch box
  • PlayStation 3 component video cable

Instructions

  1. HDMI Switch Box

    • 1

Unplug the HDMI cable that is currently in the HDMI port on the back of your television.

    • 2

Plug that cable into the "1" or "A" port on the back of the switch box.

    • 3

Plug your PlayStation 3 HDMI cable into the "2" or "B" port on the back of the switch box.

    • 4

Plug the other end of the PlayStation 3 HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of the PlayStation 3. The HDMI port is the second port from the left.

    • 5

Flip the switch on the front of the switch box to "B" or "2" to use your PlayStation 3 with your television. Some switches may just have a button to push until the desired port becomes lit by an LED.

    Component Video Cables

    • 6

Plug the end of the component video cable with only one plug into the "AV Multi Out" port on the back of your PlayStation 3. The port is the second from the right on the back of your system.

    • 7

Lay the other end of the cable flat, so the five connectors are in order.

    • 8

Pick up the red wire in the middle and plug it into the red "Component" port on the back of your television. Then plug the blue and green cables into the ports right next to the red one. Finally, plug the second red and white cables into the red and white ports labeled "Audio." These ports are right next to the component cable ports.
