How to Use a PlayStation 3 Controller for a Vista PC

Though the PlayStation 3 controller was not designed for PC use, with a bit of extra software, your computer can be configured to recognize a PS3 controller as a usable device. The controller can be used wirelessly with the PS3 console itself, but wireless support does not yet exist for PCs. You will need to use the USB connection cable that came included with your controller. You will also need the free Motion In Joy driver software, which is available online.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the PlayStation 3 Windows driver from the Motion In Joy website. Separate versions are available for Vista 32 and Vista 64 users. If you are unsure which version of Vista you are using, view your system information within the Control Panel. Once the driver has downloaded, run the ".exe" file to install the driver. Follow all on-screen prompts as necessary.

Plug your PS3 controller's USB cable into a free port on your computer. Your computer should detect the controller automatically. If not, press the "PS" button on the controller.

Launch the Motion In Joy gamepad tool. From here, you can adjust controller settings and enable DualShock mode. You can also test the controller's vibration abilities. Once all controller options are set to your liking, close this window and begin using your controller.
