Taking the Console Apart
Take off the warranty sticker on the side of the ps3 and remove the black square from underneath.
Take out the screw. Slide the lid off.
Unscrew all 8 screws and the 2 clips.
Lift of this whole section of the Playstation.
Pick up the blu-ray drive from the back. This is on the right side of the ps3. Do not pull too much as it is still attached to the console.
Take out all of the cables that are connected.
Move the console to one side, leaving only the drive.
Turn the drive upside down.
Take out all of the screws from the circuit board in a clockwise motion, remembering your start point. As you remove them arrange them in a separate area in the order they were taken out to make it easier to put them back together.
Remove the last two screws from the bottom of the drive and keep these next to the others.
Unplug the cables connected to the circuit board. Take extra care on the tiny cable that is attached at the side. This can snap easily so be patient and try to ease it out.
Take out the circuit board and remove the outer shell of the blu-ray drive.
Remove the white plastic circle by hand
Take out all of the screws from this section.
Open the case.
Remove the cables attached to the laser unit.
Unscrew the screws on the lens unit to allow you to remove it.
Clean the Lens
Locate the lens. It is small and blue and is on the mechanism in between the two rails.
Dip the Q-tip in the rubbing alcohol, squeeze the end to drain the excess as only a small amount is needed.
Rub the lens very gently for about 2 minutes.
Softly rub the dry side of the Q-tip on the lens for around 2 minutes.
Swap the Laser Unit
Place the the new lens unit where the old one used to be.
Fit the screws back into place.
Reattach the cables to the unit.
Reassemble the Console
Close the box and screw it in place using the same screws that you removed.
Put the white plastic circle back in place.
Place the circuit board back onto the drive and connect the 4 cables. Making sure to take care on the small cable.
Slide the casing underneath the circuit board and clip it back into place.
Screw each of the screws you have set aside in the order they are arranged. Start at the point where you began to unscrew the screws and follow a clockwise direction.
Fit the final two screws at the opposite end of the drive.
Place the blu-ray drive back into the PS3 and plug in the two cables that you removed.
Place the inside casing back on top.
Screw the 8 screws that you removed back in place as well as the 2 clips.
Slide the top of the console back into place.
Screw in the final screw at the side of the PS3 and push the black square over the top.
