How to Add Memory to a PlayStation 3

The Sony PlayStation 3 comes with several different hard drive sizes, ranging from 20GB to 80GB. This allows you to save games directly to the drive and even download movies from the Internet. If, however, you are running out of hard drive space and don't want to remove any currently saved data, it is possible to add memory to the gaming system through one of the USB ports on the PS3.

Instructions

    • 1

Power down the Sony PlayStation 3.

    • 2

Plug the USB-based PS3 memory card into one of the two USB ports on the PlayStation. The card must be PS3 supported -- it will state this on the packaging -- meaning you can't just use a standard computer hard drive. If the package does not directly state "PS3 Supported," look for a hard drive or flash drive that is FAT32 formatted. The PS3 only supports hard drives and flash drives in this format option.

Power on the Sony PlayStation 3. The video game system automatically detects the added storage and automatically saves all new information directly to the USB storage drive.
