How to Enable USB Storage on a PlayStation ELF

When a game is created for a video game console, it is created using a certain type of file that can only be read by that particular console. In the case of a Sony PlayStation, the file created is an ELF, or executable game file. You are permitted to copy these files over to a USB stick as backup, so long as you own the original game. It is illegal to distribute a copy of the game to anyone else.

Instructions

    • 1

Format your USB HDD to MS-DOS Fat 32 file system. Most USB HDD's are preformatted, but if yours isn't, you'll have to do it yourself. Open MS-DOS, type in "FORMAT X: /U /FS:FAT32" and press "Enter." Replace the "X" with whatever drive letter your USB port is (usually "D," "E," or "F.") If your USB HDD drive was "E," you would type in "FORMAT E: /U /FS:FAT32" and press "Enter."

    • 2

Connect the USB HDD to your PC.

    • 3

Insert the PS2 game you'd like to copy into your DVD drive -- a regular CD drive will not work.

    • 4

Launch USB Extreme by double-clicking the icon. If you don't have the program, you'll need to download it, or download a similar program such as USB Advance or USBLD Loader.

    • 5

Choose "CD" or "DVD" depending on what your PlayStation game is. The easiest way to tell is to look at the disc itself -- if the bottom is black or blue, it's a CD, and if the bottom is silver, it's a DVD.

    • 6

Select your USB drive when asked where to copy the files to.

    • 7

Give your game a title (whatever you want the file to be called) and click "Copy." The program will now copy the PlayStation ELF to your USB HDD, allowing you to store it as long as you'd like.
