Why Won't My PS3 80GB Play PS2 Games?

One of the selling points of the PlayStation 3 is its ability to play the wide catalog of PlayStation 1 and 2 games preceding it. When Sony stopped making backwards-compatible PS3s in 2007, a range of PS3s claiming to be backwards-compatible have appeared on sites such as Ebay. The savvy shopper knows that PS3 backwards-compatibility can be discovered by reading its serial code and will always request one before making a purchase.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the PS3 from the main electrical supply.

    • 2

Stand the PS3 on its side and look at its bottom. The serial number is on the rectangular sticker near a line of vents. The number is clearly labeled "Model No." and is followed by a series of letters and numbers, almost always starting with "CEC." If your PS3 does not have this sticker, look on the back of the system at the barcode and find the letters "CEC."

    • 3

Read the first five letters of the model number. If your model number is "CECHA," "CECHB," "CECHC," or "CECHE," your PS3 will play most PS2 games. These are the only model numbers that play PS2 games.
