How to Test a PS3 Power Unit

Power issues with a PlayStation 3, or PS3, can arise from a malfunctioning AC power cord or problems with the console. The AC power cord may be incompatible for your outlet or connected to a power outlet that is not functioning correctly. Console power issues can be a result of the overheating due to blocked vents or a malfunctioning internal fan. There are several areas that you can check to properly narrow down and fix a PS3 that is having power problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the model number of your PS3 on the sticker on the back of the device. Write the model number down, then check the PlayStation 3 Model list (see Resources) to make sure your console is made for use in North America. North American consoles have different power requirements, and the power cords for consoles made for other regions won't be able to properly transfer power to the unit.

    • 2

Unplug the PS3 console from the power outlet. Allow the console to cool down to room temperature. This may take 15 to 20 minutes. Plug the console into a different working power outlet. Check whether the console powers up.

    • 3

Flip on the main power switch in the rear of the console. All PS3s, excepts the 120GP PS3 console, have a power switch on the back.

    • 4

Plug the console's AC power cord into another PS3, if possible. Turn on that PS3. If it powers on, the problem is your console. Also if possible, connect another AC power cord to your PS3. If your PS3 can power up, the problem is your AC power cord.

    • 5

Move any objects or devices away from the PS3 vents. There should be a clear four inches of space between each vent and any other object or device. If the vents are blocked, the device may overheat, which will cause it to power off.

    • 6

Turn on the PS3, then turn it off and listen for the fan. If you can't hear the fan before the system powers off, you will need to have the console serviced.

    • 7

Interpret the two blinking lights on your PS3. The left light indicates the disc status, the right light shows the power status. If no lights are blinking, that means the main power switch is not flipped on. A solid red light means the system is in standby mode; hit the power button on the front of the device. A flashing red light means the system is probably overheated; check the vents and listen for the fan. A flashing green, then yellow, then red light means there is an internal disk issue; send the PS3 in for repairs.
