How to Set Up a PlayStation 3 to Use an Optical Output for Sound

  • Digital optical audio cable

      Plug the digital optical audio cable into the Optical Audio slot located on the back of the PS3. Plug the other end of the digital optical audio cable into the Optical Audio slot on the digital stereo receiver.

      Turn on the PS3. Scroll and select "Settings" on the XrossMediaBar (XMB) menu.

      Select "Sound Settings" located under the "Settings" menu. Select "Digital Out (Optical)" under "Sound Settings."

      Select the audio output capabilities of the digital receiver connected to the PS3. If unsure, leave the default settings and press the "X" button to continue. View the configuration settings page, and press "X" to save the settings.
