How to Modify a PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 is a highly customizable gaming system/multimedia center from Sony. Though the factory default settings may work fine for most people, you can take complete control over your PS3 and change the way it plays games, DVDs, Blu-ray discs and even streams media content using the various submenus contained on the unit's "crossbar" main menu system.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the power for your Sony PlayStation 3 and select "Settings" from the unit's "crossbar" menu system. This will display a number of categories on screen relating to settings that you can modify on your console.

    • 2

Select "Game Settings" to change the way that your console processes PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 games (if your PlayStation 3 can actually play PS2 games, which not all units can).

    • 3

Choose "Video Settings" if you want to modify the way your PlayStation 3 processes the video information contained on Blu-ray and DVD video discs. You can change the resolution that your console is outputting to, change the type of cables that your system is using, change menu languages and other options relating to Blu-ray discs and change default subtitle languages for discs that support this feature.

    • 4

Open the "Music Settings" window if you want to modify the way your PlayStation 3 plays back music tracks from either CDs or from your home network. You can also change whether or not your PlayStation 3 is automatically importing CDs to its own internal hard drive when you insert them into the mouth of the console.

Choose "Network Settings" to change the way your console is connected to the Internet. You can connect your console to a non-Internet connection, home wired or wireless network for the purpose of media streaming, or you can connect your console to a wired or wireless Internet network to get it online. Once online, you can download additional content and even entire games from the PlayStation Network Store.
