My PS3 Guitar Hero Optical Doesn't Work

The optical drive on any computer or gaming system is the CD/DVD drive. This holds true when using a Sony PlayStation 3. Every game played on the system (that isn't downloaded to the hard drive) runs off the optical drive. When playing "Guitar Hero," you may occasionally find the optical drive doesn't work. When this occurs, you need to inspect some of the hardware in order to determine why the equipment is not working.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the Guitar Hero disc to make sure it is made for the PS3 and not the PS2. Most PlayStation 3 systems do not support PS2 playback, so the game is not going to work no matter what you try to do.

    • 2

Clean off the bottom of the Guitar Hero game. If the disc is dirty, the system's optical drive is not going to read it. Remove all dirt, dust and fingerprints before inserting it back into the gaming system.

    • 3

Power on the PS3 and select "Network," then "PlayStation Store." The video game system scans itself to see if there are any available updates for the hardware. If there is, download the update and wait for the information to install onto the computer. Without the updates, you will be unable to run the game.

    • 4

Power down the PS3 (flip the switch on the rear of the device) the disconnect the game from your TV and the electrical outlet. Leave it off for a few minutes, then power everything back on. Insert the game back into the optical drive and the system should now play back the game, as the internal hardware reset itself (without deleting any saved gaming information).
