How to Repair a PS3 Drive Board

Your PlayStation 3, like any other game console, has a computer-like structure with a main board and other components to help it perform its functions. The PS3's drive board functions as the main board for this console. If your PS3 unit does not properly detect hardware you attach to it, you usually have a drive board issue and must get an update from Sony to restore normal functionality.

PS3 with Internet connection
PS3 controller

Instructions

  Connect your controller to the PS2 through USB. Do not use any wireless features as they may stop functioning while performing this task, if they functioned at all with the drive board's current software.

  Press the power button on your Sony PS3 unit and press the PS3 icon on your controller.

  Navigate using your controller's directional pad until you reach the "Network" option.

  Navigate downward to the "PS3 Store" option and press the "X" button on your controller. Wait until you receive notification of an update.

  Select the "Download" option using your controller and wait until it finishes downloading and installing. Your PS3 restarts automatically after installing the update, fixing any issues encountered on your drive board.
