How to Access a PS3 Hard Drive

The PlayStation 3 hard drive holds all of the information on your system, from game save files to movies and music to system updates. There may come a time you need or want to replace the PS3 hard drive. Whether you are trying to replace a broken hard drive or simply want to increase the amount of storage space, all you need to open the PS3 are standard screwdrivers. If possible, you should back up your saved game files to a USB stick before opening the PS3.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the PS3 and flip the "I/O" switch on the back to the "O" position. Unplug all external cords from the system.

    • 2

Pull off the black panel on the left side of the system. You can use your fingernails to do this, or get something with a flat edge, such as a flat-head screwdriver if you need one, but it's not necessary. Do not use too much force, as the panel pops off easily.

    • 3

Remove the single screw holding the hard drive in place using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Slide the tab that the screw was holding to the side to unlock the hard drive, then gently pull the hard drive out of the slot.

    • 4

Remove the four screws (two on each side) securing the metal case to the hard drive using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Slide the hard drive out of the case.
