How to Activate a PlayStation 3 Controller

The Sony PlayStation 3 has the ability to play high-definition video games and movies, and allows users to share photos and home videos, as well as browse the Internet. Before you use your PlayStation 3 for the first time, you must set the system up and also connect the included wireless controller to the system. This controller lets you play games, navigate through settings menus and make selections in the PlayStation online store.

  Power on the PlayStation 3 by flipping the main "Power" switch on the back of the console. Tap the "Power" icon on the front of the console. You should see the indicator light glow green.

  Connect the supplied USB cable to the wireless controller, and then connect the other end to one of the PlayStation 3's USB ports. The controller is automatically activated. If you want to play without the cable, disconnect it now. The controller remains active.

  Press the "PS" button on the front of the controller if you do not want to use the USB cable. In a few seconds, the controller is activated.

  Perform this method for each controller you wish to activate. Up to seven controllers may be paired with the system at once.
