The SIXAXIS and DUALSHOCK 3 are the two official controllers for the PlayStation 3 gaming console. Both controllers are wireless and similar in design, although unlike the SIXAXIS, the DUALSHOCK 3 includes force feedback support. As with all wireless PS3 peripherals, either controller must be properly paired with the PS3 before it becomes operational. You may need to reconnect your PS3 controller if the battery drains or you use the controller on a different PS3.

Turn on the PS3.

Use the included USB cable to attach the controller to the PS3. The lights on the top of the controller will flash.

Press the "PS" button. When the lights stabilize, the controller has been paired, and you can now use it. You can use the controller while it is charging via USB, or disconnect the USB cable and use it wirelessly.
