How to Prevent My PS3 60 GB From Overheating

If you still have a 60 GB Sony PlayStation 3, you're going to want to hang onto it as long as you can. These were one of only two units ever released that were backward-compatible with PlayStation 2 games, allowing you to play PS2 classics on your newer console. Prevent your PS3 from overheating to help ensure your console's longevity.

Turn off your PlayStation 3 after every two hours of game play. This is recommended in the Sony PlayStation 3 user manual. Shutting the system off every two hours allows it to cool down, which prevents it from overheating. It also gives your eyes a break, so they aren't strained from extensive video game playing.

Don't set anything on top of or near your PlayStation 3. As your PS3 runs, it naturally gets hot, but if you put any electronic device on or near the unit, the heat from the second device could be too much for your PS3 and cause it to overheat. Always leave a gap between your PS3 and other objects on a shelf, and don't push the PS3 directly up against the back of a shelf or a wall.

Clean out the air vents on the back of the PS3. These lead directly to the unit's internal fan, which cools the machine. If the air vents get clogged with dust, the fan cannot cool the PS3 properly, which causes the entire system to overheat. Blow out the dust on the air vents occasionally using compressed air, so a harmful amount of dust doesn't build up inside the system.
