Self-Updater (with Wi-Fi)
Power on your console and wait for it to connect to the Internet and PlayStation Network functions. If your console isn't connected to Wi-Fi, navigate to settings, select "Network Settings" and follow the onscreen prompts to connect your console to your wireless network.
Back out to the "Settings" menu. Either scroll up to "System Update" or attempt to begin a PlayStation game. The console will prompt you to begin the download.
Select "Yes" and begin the download. Wait for the console to finish the download and install process. When complete, the console will restart with the latest updates.
Disc-Based Update (No Wi-Fi Access)
Visit the PlayStation "System Software Updates" website under References and click the "Download Now," button. Set the download to save to your desktop and wait for the download to finish.
Insert your USB thumb drive into an open USB port on your computer and open the drive in Windows Explorer.
Drag and drop the PS3 update files onto your USB drive. Wait for the files to finish copying, then eject the USB stick and remove it from your computer.
Insert the USB jump drive into an open port on the PlayStation 3 console. Power on the console.
Select the file from the menu and press the "Triangle" button to bring up the file menu. Copy the file to your PlayStation 3 hard drive.
Select the update file, and install it to your PlayStation 3. Wait for the system to finish the update and restart your console with the new features.
Disc-Based Update (No Internet)
Insert a recent PlayStation 3 disc into your console.
Select the game from the disc menu. The game will prompt you to update the system software. If the game begins normally, eject the game and try a more recent game.
Select "OK" to begin the update. Wait for the update to install and restart your PlayStation.
