How to Reset a PlayStation 3 to AV

If you took your PlayStation 3 to a friend's house and hooked it up to his HDTV with an HDMI cable, you may have been in for a surprise when you got home to your older television. If you didn't change the video output back to the regular AV cable, your system will still output video to a port you now can't use.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your PlayStation 3 to your television with the composite yellow, white and red AV cables and plug the system in to the power outlet. You can also use a component cable if you own one and your TV supports it. If you already turned the system on and see no video, turn it back off with the power button.

    • 2

Press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps after about five seconds. The system will reset to SD output on the AV cable and proceed to boot normally.

    • 3

Press the "PS" button on a controller to turn it on and log in to your user account. The reset process removes all video settings, so you will need to choose your options again.

    • 4

Select the "Settings" menu and pick "Display Settings" and then "Video Output Settings."

    • 5

Proceed through the settings to select TV type and resolution. If using the composite AV cable included with the system, settings should be correct automatically after resetting, but verify them to be sure. If you're switching to a component cable on an HDTV, you will have to reselect the compatible HD resolutions of your television.

Save the settings and continue using your system as normal.
