How to Play AVI Files on Playstation 3 Using a Thumb Drive

A thumb drive is an external USB flash storage device. In addition to transferring files between computers, a thumb drive can also be used to play videos on a PlayStation 3. But before the device can be plugged into the game console, the thumb drive needs to contain videos that are supported for playback on the PlayStation 3. AVI is a digital video format that is widely supported by media players and video editing applications. Although the AVI format is compatible with PlayStation 3, users need to ensure that the media is compressed with the right codec before it is played on the game console. Once an AVI file is re-formatted as a PlayStation 3-supported video, the media can be uploaded to a thumb drive and streamed through the game console.

  Launch a video-conversion application that can convert AVI files into PlayStation 3-supported video. Hamster Free Video Converter and iWisoft Free Video Converter are two examples of freeware that support this task.

  Import the AVI file into the video-conversion application. Program the output format by selecting an AVI encoding profile that is optimized for playback on the PlayStation 3.

  Perform the video conversion. The application will display a confirmation message once the PlayStation 3-supported AVI output file has been successfully encoded.

  Plug in a thumb drive in the computer's USB port. Wait until the connected device is recognized by the computer and copy the PlayStation 3-supported AVI output file onto the thumb drive. Eject the device once the media has been fully copied.

  Turn on the PlayStation 3 and plug the thumb drive into the game console's USB port.

  Go to the home screen and select "Videos." Press the triangle button on the controller to select the listing for the thumb drive. Press the "X" button to view the contents of the connected device.
