How to Restore Firmware on PS3

The Sony PlayStation 3, like other game consoles, is prone to errors and other firmware issues that cause problems with functionality. If you see frequent error messages or experience other issues, one of your troubleshooting options is to restore the PS3 and its firmware to its original settings. This process is similar to reformatting a computer's hard drive and you will lose all of the data saved on your PS3.

Instructions

Scroll through the sub-menus on your PS3's main menu until you reach "Settings." Scroll down to "System Settings" and press the "X" button.

Highlight "Full Format" and press the "X" button. A prompt screen will appear with an estimated time for completing the task, and you will be asked to confirm your decision. Highlight "Yes" and press the "X" button. Press the "X" button again when the system prompts you to restart to complete the restoration process.
