How to Set Up a Play Station 3 Network

Online connectivity is one of the keys to the video game experience for today's generation of gamers. All three major consoles have exclusive online content, and the majority of games released have an option to play online. These consoles also have online stores where users can purchase games, videos and more. If you have a Playstation 3, you can't enjoy the whole experience the console offers unless you connect it to your home network.

Instructions

Make sure that your home network is set up and working properly. The easiest way to do this is to test it with any other online device in your home such as a personal computer. If you don't have any other online devices, just be sure that all the lights on your modem are on and indicate that the network is functioning properly. A wired or a wireless network will work with your Playstation 3.

    • 2

Plug an Ethernet cable from your router into your Playstation 3's network port if you only have a wired connection available. If you have a wireless router, be sure your Playstation 3 is in range of the signal.

    • 3

Navigate your Playstation XMB menu to the "Settings" column and select network settings. If you have a wired connection plugged into your Playstation 3, go to "Internet Connection Settings" and press "X." Follow the prompts on the screen to set up your wired connection. Select "Easy" when given setting options for a simple connection.

Choose a wireless connection if that option presents itself after you select Internet Connection Settings. Choose between WEP or WPA security. If you do not know what kind of security you have, check your Internet settings on your computer or ask your Internet service provider.

    • 5

Enter the password that allows you to access your wireless network. This is the same password that you use to access the Internet through your computer. You probably set it up as you set up your network, or had it provided to you by your ISP.

Test your connection. There is an Internet connection test you can run, or you can try to access the Playstation Store. You will not be able to access it if your connection is down. If you see the store and can navigate it with no problems, your connection is up and running.
