How to Fix the Firmware in a PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 system has experienced several issues with its firmware update system. One of the major errors, which occurred in 2008, caused many players to lose data stored on their hard drives. More recently, firmware was blamed for causing communication issues with PS3 controllers and certain games being unplayable. The best method for fixing your PS3 firmware is to update to the most recent version.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your PS3 system and enter the XMB menu. You can do this by removing whatever game or movie is currently in the disc tray.

    • 2

Select "Settings" and then scroll down to "System Update." Press "X" to open the menu.

    • 3

      Click "Update via Internet."

    • 4

Wait while the PS3 searches the network for the most recent firmware software. If new software is detected, you will receive a message that states "The latest update data was found."

    • 5

Press the "X" button on your PS3 controller to begin the automatic firmware update. This will resolve any problems with old firmware.

    • 6

Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the update and restart your system.
