Instructions
Place the PlayStation 3 in a well-ventilated area. This game console comes with a small fan that is intended to keep the inner components cool. However, if the fan can't get enough outside air, it will not function properly and the PlayStation 3 will overheat. Some entertainment centers may not have enough space for the console, and placing it on carpet can make the problem worse. It is best to situate the console where it will have at least three inches of available empty space on all sides.
Turn off the PlayStation 3 when not in use. Just like computers, a game console will still have some activity going on inside, even when it is not in use. Turning off the console when it is not being used will not only help prevent overheating, it will help extend the life of the machine.
Clean the console from any dust. Interior dust in a PlayStation 3 can lead to overheating. Using a can of compressed air, spray the inside of the game console through the available vents. In addition, the exterior of the machine should also be cleaned on a regular basis to avoid dust and dirt build-up. Clean the areas around the vents as well, since this dust will eventually end up inside the console.
Monitor the system for any continued overheating. If the above steps have been applied and the console consistently overheats, there may be additional problems with the machine. Make a log of any issues and keep track of how many times the PlayStation 3 has overheated.
Contact Sony if the overheating continues. In some cases, the PlayStation 3 may have a malfunctioning cooling fan. If this is the case, it is possible to send the console back to Sony, and they will repair the problem. Their contact number inside the US is 1-800-345-SONY. The hours of operation for their support line are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. PST Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. PST Sundays.
