How to Link a PS3 Controller to a Computer

Using your computer keyboard to play your favorite video games can be discomforting. Fortunately, PlayStation 3 owners can improve their gaming experience by connecting their PS3 controller to their PCs. Depending on the type of PS3 controller you own (SIXAXIS or DualShock 3), you can download a compatible driver that will allow you to install and use your controller for PC gaming. The drivers are compatible with XP, Vista or Windows 7 platforms.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if you have a SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 controller. The model is listed on the controller.

    • 2

Download the SIXAXIS or DualShock 3 filter driver online. A variety of gaming websites, such as QuickJump, offer free drivers. See References.

    • 3

Double-click on the executable file. Your zipping utility, such as WinRar, will open automatically.

    • 4

Choose a destination folder for your driver and extract the file.

    • 5

Connect your PS3 controller to your PC via the USB cable. Your computer will recognize the controller as a "USB Human Interface Device."

    • 6

Locate the driver and install it on your computer by using the Windows wizard. After installing the driver, press the "PS" button on front of your controller.

    • 7

Click on "Start" and open the "Control Panel." Click on the "Hardware and Sound," and then click on "Game Controllers." The "Game Controllers" dialog box will appear on the screen. If you installed the controller successfully, the PS3 controller will appear in the "Installed game controllers" list.
